DAVID KRUSE COSTE, born David Victor Coste, has lived a life of music marked by original, creative thought and a never-ending quest to "master the notes".
Largely self-taught during his elementary years, Dave later picked up formal training, beginning with drums and percussion first with Jeff Lynde in California, then with percussion master Ernest Centoscudi in Connecticut. In college he studied classical percussion at the Hartt College of Music in Hartford, CT; contemporary music composition with Thomas Putsche at Hartt; electro-acoustic composition under Barry Schrader at the California Institute of the Arts; piano with Gaylord Mowry at CalArts; concert music composition and theory with Roy Travis at UCLA, piano with An Perry at UCLA, classical Indian music with noted musicologist N.A. Jairazbhoy at UCLA, and later with organist Mary Jean Carter in Wenatchee, WA and pianist Jeanne Patterson in Phoenix, AZ.
Dave's primary work is composing, having produced hundreds of songs for various media. His first work was as a resident composer at University Lutheran Chapel at UCLA, writing choral and electronic music. His church works include his five musicals, Dirk Danger and the Lady in White, The Dogs Must Be Crazy, Blinded By Silence, The Thingy That Cracks Nuts and Noelophobia, produced at Esperanza Lutheran Church in Phoenix. A revised version of Noelophobia was performed in December 2017. While at Esperanza, Dave wrote and arranged choral work, ministry band music, music for video, children's music and instrumental pieces. He also wrote the music for eight Vacation Bible School programs, the most recent being Quest For the Kingdom in June 2017. The tenth anniversary of his first VBS program, Wayback to the Bible, was presented in June 2018.
Dave's classroom experience includes an adjunct faculty position teaching music theory and guest lecturing at Wenatchee Valley College and K-8 music instruction at Sonoran Science Academy - Ahwatukee. While at SSA Dave wrote their Spirit Song as well as instructional children's songs. He also taught middle school music theory at Veritas Preparatory School in Phoenix, writing curriculum and arranging music for recorder ensembles. His recorder arrangements of complex classical music has won praise from students, parents and administration.
As a performer Dave regularly played guitar, drums and keyboards at Esperanza Lutheran Church up to February 2019, keyboards for the local jazz fusion band Jazzatukee and multiple instruments for his creative project The Company Drive. In the past he's played bass in several bands in Los Angeles, including Images and The Invisible Theatre. He worked on a solo performance project Urban Wenatchee, played tympani and classical percussion in opera orchestras and musical pit bands, and has sat in on several local bands as a live session player.
In 2010 Dave launched Josquin Music to consolidate his experiences, including all his music and instruction. A member of the Music Teachers National Association and the Arizona Music Teachers Association, he currently teaches privately a roster of keyboard, guitar and drum students with a range from 6 years old to adult.
Dave is married to artist Pamela Kruse Coste, and together they have three children, Wilhelmine, Louis and Elanienne.
